Raised Baked Donuts


1 1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 3/4 cup sifted flour
2 eggs
2 tsp. salt
2 pkg. yeast or 2 cakes
1/4 cup lukewarm water

Scald milk. Add shortening, sugar, salt and spices. Cool. Soften yeast in lukewarm water. Add with rest of ingredients. Cover, let rise 1 hour. Knead several times. Roll 1/2 inch thick, cut with doughnut cutter. Dough is soft. Place on cookie sheet. Brush with melted butter or a little oil. Let rise 20 minutes. Bake at 425 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Brush again with melted butter, roll in sugar or put on glaze.

Makes 2 1/2 to 3 dozen.
