Super Mario Bros.

Probably the single most important video game to be synonymous with the NES. The all time classic game that started it all. The game that rocketed Nintendo to stardom and made it a solid figure in video games. How does it fare in today's world 20 something years later?

Sorry to say, but SMB is not going to rock the boat as it once did. SMB is one of those games every gamer must play at least once in their lifetime. It's the game that started Mario and you know...it's the roots. What I found was it was incredibly tough. Don't expect to die over and over and over again just to start from World 1-1 all over again. The best part? You will die again and again and you will continue playing until you beat it. That' right. For some reason, SMB with all it's history will just put you in a spell until you kick Bowsers ass and rescue the princess.

Like many NES games. The levels in SMB are filled to the brim with baddies. They're everywhere. It's like they all decided to just get in your fucking way. Bullet Bills are everywhere in some levels - on the bottom, the top, the other direction. They're coming at you in every direction. Tell me how the hell am I supposed to get through all that stuff? More importantly, how the hell are new gamers supposed to get through all that shit? Goddamn, it's beyond ass.

Now I'm no hater of Mario. In fact I love the little plumber, but why does this game so hard on some levels? Mario's never Super Mario long enough to actually do some real damage. It's always fireball sticks waving around, annoying little black bomb nuts, Koopas that will backfire on you after you stomp them and kick'em, Goombas walking in your way, Koopas that throw hammers everywhere. And all that just to get to a castle to fight Bowser who is the easiest to defeat. All you have to do is dodge Bowser and then hit the axe and it will destroy the bridge.

Moreover, what is going on in those levels that are like mazes? There are pipes that bring you back to the start of the level, and make you start all over. It's like bringing you back to previous parts of the level just to waste your time or confuse you. After a while you realize that you've past those parts and that something must be up. Shit those levels are annoying.

Then there is the music. People complain about old games having one annoying theme song. What about SMB? Pretty much every level is the same song (I said mostly). It gets so annoying. Yes, it was an NES 8-bit game, and therefore I shouldn't be expecting much, but goddamn.

Is SMB worth playing? Absolutely. Is it an amazing game? It's okay. Is it for the hardcore? Definitely.

Final Rating: 7/10
